Using the code/markdown backtick in iPhone/iPad (iOS) device

When writing articles with code or syntax highlighting you may want to use the backtick (eg: `).

It's not very obvious on how to do with this on an iPhone/iPad (iOS) device. Here is how:

  1. Press the 123 button on your iOS keyboard
  2. Hold on the apostrophie/forward tick (eg: ')
  3. Slide your finger over to the far left to select the backtick

See here:

If you are doing this a lot, you may want to create a keyboard shortcut.

To do this:

  1. Select Settings
  2. Then General
  3. Then Keyboard
  4. Select Text Replacement
  5. Tap the + in the top right of screen
  6. Type a backtick (see above) in the Phrase section
  7. Type ;; in the Shortcut - or anything else which you will remember.

Then you can access a backtick quickly by typing ;; on your iOS keyboard!
